 COSTUME

Costumes are clothes and accessories worn by actors and actresses to portray a particular character during any drama production.

Costumes are often one of the things that audience see in a play and have a little idea of the play. It is used to give additional information about the play to the audience. Without costumes, a drama production is incomplete.  The person in charge of costume in a drama production is called the costumier



TYPES OF COSTUME

Costumes are divided into two types. They are; 

i. Character costume: This is the kind of costume designed based on the roles the character plays in a drama production. 

ii. Decorative costume: Decorative costume is a kind of costume designed to get beautiful pictures in a drama presentation. 

IMPORTANCE OF COSTUMES IN A DRAMA PRODUCTION

a. It is used to give additional information about the play to the audience. 

b. It is used to tell the age of the character. 

c. costume is used to tell the sex of a character. 

d. It is used to tell the occupation of a particular character. 

e. It is used to tell the time, climate and season when the play is set. 


MAKE -UP

Make-up are substances such as powder, lip stick, paints etc. worn by actors and actresses to enhance their appearances during a drama presentation. 

Make -up is an important element in drama used to create the total look of a character. 

TYPES OF MAKE-UP

a. Straight make-up: This is a kind of make-up that allows actors and actresses to appear with their natural look on stage with their faces made better and sharp but not changed.

b. Character make-up: Character make-up is a kind of make-up used to create a different look for the character even if the same actor plays different roles in a play. It is used to change the appearance of  an actor to portray particular character he is acting in a play. e.g. a young lady plays the role of an old woman.  A character make-up is also called clown make-up




a. Special make-up: This is a kind of make-up used to achieve special effects on a particular character e.g. a make-up used to depict an accident victim. 



IMPORTANCE OF MAKE-UP IN DRAMA PRODUCTION

a. It is used to tell the health and mood of a character. 

b. It is used to tell the age of a character. 

c. It is used to give an actor the appropriate look for the role to play. 

d. It helps the audience understand the play better. 

e. It tells the family and background of a character.
